Signs your guttering needs attention
- water spilling over the edge in heavy rain
- drips from the joints
- gutters sagging between the brackets
- damp patches or green staining on the walls below
- plants growing out of the gutter
- downpipes that are cracked, loose or blocked
Overflowing gutters are not just untidy. Water running down the walls can cause damp inside, and water pushed back under the roof edge can get into the roof.
What the work involves
- Access. A ladder, tower or scaffold, depending on the height and length of the run.
- Check the cause. Blockage, failed joints, broken brackets, lost fall, or gutters that are simply worn out.
- Repair or replace. Joints resealed, brackets replaced and the fall corrected, or the old guttering taken down and new gutters and downpipes fitted.
- Check the fascias. If the boards behind are rotten, you will be told before new gutters go up. See fascias and soffits.
- Test and clear up. The gutters are checked to make sure water runs to the outlets, and old materials are taken away.
With a new roof or roofline
If you are having a new roof or new fascias and soffits, it makes sense to replace the guttering at the same time, while the access is already up.
What affects the price
- the length of the gutter runs and the height of the house
- whether access needs a tower or scaffold
- the number of downpipes and outlets
- whether the fascias need replacing too
